Speak UP!!!
“You can be amazing. You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug.
Is it possible to speak without spoken words? It is absolutely possible. There are also ways to prove it. In anderson's novel speak, there are plenty examples that show ways of speaking without actual spoken words. Have you ever wanted to tell someone that you’re worried, sad, or mad, but you felt nervous or didn’t know what to say? Have you ever seen something happen that you disagreed with but didn’t know what to do about it? We all get these feelings at times – even adults!
All important societal and cultural changes started with people speaking up and daring to challenge the status quo. Homosexuals would never have become accepted if it were not for brave individuals daring to speak up in a time when homosexuality was seen as a crime and a mental illness.
The same way atheists will never be accepted by the deeply religious unless people they know dare to speak up and declare themselves atheists. It maybe leads to their parents disowning them but maybe just maybe their sisters and brothers and other relatives feels differently. No factual argument ever comes close to being as powerful as emotional connections, culture changes always come around when it impossible to divide the world in us vs them and that becomes much harder if “them” is members of your own family.
IOf course speaking up will rarely directly benefit the one doing it, there are, through the course of history, many cases where individuals that are seen as “them” have gone through absolute hell after challenging the current world view and who never got any payback for their efforts whatsoever, however, as I said, the sacrifices of these individuals have been monumentally important in changing the world over time.
This is not to say that one should always speak up as soon as one sees injustice but at some point one has to ask oneself if staying silent is actually worse than perpetrating the crime in the first place. The apathy of the masses is the only reason why the powerful can stay in power and power imbalance can continue. If every German citizen not supporting the Nazi party in the 1940s had dared to speak up and act Hitler could never have done what he did, so in a sense his crimes were made possible only because better men kept quiet.
The art of communication is not mastered by just knowing what to say and how to say it. A big factor is knowing when to say it. So often people sit back and say nothing when something really needs to be said. It could be an idea, a suggestion, an observation, a criticism...but for some reason they don't want to speak up.They may be afraid of hurting another person, looking meanor foolish, or opening a can of worms that will make a mess in everyone's lives. Sometimes it seems like staying silent is the wiser choice. But here are three reasons why despite the risk, standing up and saying your peace is best.
spoken words? It is absolutely possible.
Silence is deemed approval. You may think that staying silent keeps you from being involved in any conflict, but quite the opposite. Silence is as much an active form of communication as talking. Anytime you are involved in a situation, people are aware of all the input and lack of it. If you disapprove and don't say anything it will not make you seem easy going. If the problem persists and you did nothing people may consider it as enabling and think the issue is as much your fault as the person who actually caused the problem. You may destroy trust and create resentment.
No one else may know. You can't assume the obvious is obvious. Your experience and knowledge has value in a given situation. No one else has your unique perspective. That doesn't mean that everything in your brain is worth communicating, but with a little discretion and thought, you should be able to bring value in most situations. And your piece of the puzzle may be the most important finisher. You're also not doing yourself any favors by not sharing your expertise. People don't automatically recognize your skills, values, ambitions, and desires when you are quiet
You may not be alone in your thinking. It's entirely possible that your insightful observations and conclusions have surfaced in the minds of others. Others may share your thoughts and opinions, but may be also unwilling to speak up. By speaking your mind you encourage them to voice their opinions as well. If everyone holds back, the bus may silently head over a cliff.
wIt’s important for you to learn how to stand up and speak up for yourself. And it is a necessary life lesson one must take in order to mature. It is more fulfilling to take the better road of building confidence to stand up for what you want and believe in.
